Re: Rainfall totals?

We've had only about 1/2 inch. But it's been slow and light so not much runoff. 100% chance of more rain today. Hooray!

Re: Black eyed peas

I was having leftovers last night and I added some rotel tomatoes to my peas. It was good! I've done that too. This time I just added some jalapenos. But, turns out it wasn't enough because I can't even taste them. They were still good. Cooked 'em in the crock pot for about 10 hours then added the ...

Re: Black eyed peas

Of all the many varieties of what are called field pies (purple hulls, crowders, etc.) black eyes are the worst. I had never seen or heard of crowders (or as they call 'em out here cream peas) or purple hulls till we moved to East Texas and I worked at a nursery which sold all types of peas. We jus...

Uh, that's what 2 year olds do. Heck, my dog can unzip a zipper. Stupid irresponsible people = tragedy.

Re: Cooking mistakes

Being a rather adventurous cook I've had many many mistakes. Did the giblets in the turkey with the first one too. Also made the mistake of cooking one in those plastic cooking bags many years ago. At the end of cooking time there was a bony carcass with meat lying all around it. I can't leave any r...

Re: Black Eyed Peas

I want mine cooked to mush. That takes cooking forever and a half.

The age of the dried peas/beans has a lot to do with cooking time. I learned never to buy dark pinto beans because they will never become soft. I don't know how to tell when BEPs are old.

Re: Black eyed peas

Back in my days of being with Meal A Day there were some very definite and strong opinions (country folks do love their black eyes) about how BEPs should be properly cooked and having plenty of "pot liquor" was a very important point. They always turned out great there. We just put them in...
