Tony Stewart hits, kills driver in sprint car race

A race car driver was killed Saturday night after he was struck on the track by NASCAR star Tony Stewart, according to Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Philip C. Povero.

During a sprint car race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park, driver Kevin Ward Jr. was spun out by Stewart, got out of his car to show his displeasure and then was struck by Stewart's car, sending Ward sliding down the track, fellow sprint car racer Tyler Graves and witness Adam Dulski told USA TODAY Sports.

Povero confirmed the driver was taken by ambulance to Thompson Health and was pronounced dead on arrival. Povero said his office would not identify the driver until receiving confirmation from his family that they had notified family and friends.

"This is an ongoing investigation of an on-track crash," Povero said.

Povero indicated Stewart, 43, was ''fully cooperative'' and that the incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter.

I don't think Tony did much wrong, that guy should have never got out of his car and walked on the track. If he would have stayed in his car and waited for the safety crew he'd be alive today.

The first person I saw killed was returning to his disabled race car on the track when another car spun out and hit the disabled car trapping the disabled cars drivers neck between his car and the wall. Practically cut off his head.

Stewart gunned his engine causing the rear of his car to spin and hit the guy. It was intentional and obvious when you watch the recording of it.

I think Tony Stewart should be in jail for at least manslaughter. How many times has he been in squabbles and fights on the track? Too darn many to explain this one as an accident. The camera proves otherwise.

While Tony Stewart does race in NASCAR, NASCAR had nothing to do with this. It was a dirt track, NOT NASCAR! FYI you have to accelerate in turns. I'd love to hear Mark, the race car driver's take on this since he is the pro! We would go and see Mark compete. I always closed my eyes as he went into the turn and hubby would tell me "He's OK" and I could look again. I don't know how Donna can stand it. They are scary fast in the turns on a dirt track. No judgment from me on who was wrong, if anyone was.

This is what I think will happen. DA will end up taking this to a grand jury seeking an involuntary manslaughter indictment. Ward family will file suit for wrongful death.

One of our local McDonalds just lost a civil suit to the tune of $27 million brought by the families of two kids who died as the result of a car accident. Fight in the parking lot of McDonalds during an inpromtu rave concert, promoted by an assistant manager of said McDonalds, at 2:00 am. Crowd of 200 drunken college kids; boy beaten up badly; girlfriend and friends were driving him to hospital (allegedly under the influence, as they were taking a very bizarre trip to a College Station hospital - not closest hospital) when they ran a red light; got t-boned, and boy and his girlfriend were killed in the wreck.
