So this happened

Postby Sangersteve » Fri May 18, 2018 8:34 pm

Donna approached me about a month ago to inform me that we have amassed too much stuff, and need to have a garage sale.

I calmly replied it would be easier to take the stuff to the Sanger crisis center and just get the tax deduction. Or just surprise the garbage collection crew.

She pondered this a moment and allowed that would be a good thing to do, however she said we have some really nice things that would earn us a couple of bucks.

I opined that sitting in the yard waiting for customers all day would not be a large profit center and haggling with a stranger over 50 cents is not fun.

So we compromised.

The sale is tomorrow.

Many years ago we lived in CA. I was retired by the company I worked for and we had decided to return to TX. To lessen what we had to move, since we were paying for the move, we had a weekend garage sale. They started showing up an hour before the announced start time. They come in groups and while you are answering questions from some the rest of the group are stealing you blind. The more people that show up, the more you lose.

That was it for garage sales for us. I'd give it to some group or throw it in the trash before I'd let another series of thieves hang around my house stealing it.

Around here you can put junk on the curb Saturday morning and by Sunday afternoon most if not all of it is gone.

Here that works 7 days a week.

I had one a month ago. The annual community garage sale weekend. I had a lot of stuff. Weather was horrible, cold and windy. In 2 full days I did $30.

I never make over $100 in a garage sale. I think I price it too cheap.
I just donate now--less stress on me.

For items that are worth more than $20, I just put them on the local FB classified site and sit on them for as long as it takes to sell them. I always meet my buyers down at the corner gas station. I'll make that drive any time for a 20 dollar bill.

Items not worth $20 aren't worth my time and go in the trash.

I also like to play the curb game. My favorite time to put stuff out there is about 7:00 pm. It's usually gone by morning.

Here in Plano, you put it out the day before the monthly city pick up day. It will usually be gone before they get here.

I put a crappy dishwasher out front that didn't work when I lived in South Irving. There was a guy picking it up within an hour. I even got him to pick up a second junk dishwasher I still had in my garage. Win...win.

And no I will never have another garage or yard sale. Not worth my time.

So are you still alive? How much did you make/still have? Did that cure donna of ever wanting to do another one?

Still alive, we made 130 bucks.

The traffic slowed down at noon, I got my compromise, we shut down at 1pm.

Yeah Donna was done with it by 9.

A tree fell on a 15'x15' chain link dog pen behind our house back during the winter. I had a huge mess to clean up....

I bought a chain saw and cut up the tree about a month ago. I advertised it on the local FB classified site as "free firewood," and it was gone within three hours.

I disassembled the fence and got all the posts out of the ground last week. I advertised all of it as "free chain link fencing materials" on the local FB classified site this past weekend, and it was gone within three hours.

Both ads had the following stipulations: "You have to load it, and you have to take all of it."

The mess in my yard is now completely cleaned up.

You can get rid of just about anything if it is free.
