How many REAL friends do you have?

I'm not talking about Facebook friends, such as the girl who knew that guy you sat next to in high school 20 years ago.

I'm talking about REAL friends; the kind that would come to the hospital at 2:00 AM if you needed them.

I used to have more, but I spend a lot of time with my kids now (10 & 11) so I've lost touch with a few. I'd say I'm down to about 5-6, with about 30 or so acquaintances. By "acquaintance" I'm referring to neighbors, church friends I don't hang out with but know, fellow parents on sports teams, etc.

For the sake of discussion, I'm not including family.

How many REAL friends do you have.

Excluding family..I would say no one that would come to the hospital at 2 am.

But honestly, I've never sought to have to have friends like that..that would be a bit weird.

There are people at church who would come to my aid, but I wouldn't consider them close friends.

My husband has lost some of his real/close friends in the past 2 years--death.
It makes it lonely for him.

I understand. It's just that the question is framed so that only family would pass that test for me.

I think I can answer that question by counting how many friends I would go to the hospital for at 2am. I say 4. There would probably 5 if that 5th person would ask but I don't think they would.

actually, my number is above average. but do to my travels, some cannot make that drive to the hospital or to jail to bail me out..... logistics of distance.

5 of us are very close. I only have one relative (other than children and grandchildren) in Texas. But I know my pool buddies would be there if I ever needed them. Actually, they have been. I've been there for them, too. And yes, as in Librarylady's post, we've lost some due to death. Golda is the first one that comes to mind. My husband and I have friends together and friends separately.
