So what is the alternative to Ukraine agreeing to a cease fire and ceding the ethnic Russian areas to Putin ?

Keep doing what has been done for the last three years ? Funding the fight to the last Ukrainian ?

Committing American Troops to fight Rooskies ?

Getting NATO to fight the Rooskies ?

What has been going on for three years ain't working for anyone except the military industrial complex and the politicians that are skimming money.

Ukraine is a country with a weird history, and shifting borders for centuries. Marginally less corrupt than Russian; with a little unelected prick at the helm.

Perhaps this will motivate the Ukrainians to select a better more diplomatic leader; elected hopefully, if they ever resume elections.

Not quite true. Ukrainian law requires suspension of elections during martial law. That law has been in place since before Zelensky was ever elected.

Even if that happens, Putin will not be satisfied with what they have conquered so far for very long. He is a Chekist & true believer in the "Russkiy Mir" (Russian World). Any place that was once part of the Russian Empire or Soviet Union remains forever part of it. Putin had the Russian constitution amended to prohibit forever any cession or sale of any part of "Mother Russia". That includes the Baltic states & Finland (by extension, even Alaska), which are part of NATO. Putin has stated in no uncertain terms Ukraine will never join NATO. He has actually threatened the use of nuclear weapons to prevent that, an absolute red line not to be crossed. I believe he means that
