I feel vindicated

Postby Mark » Tue May 06, 2025 9:31 am

If the intersection of vehicle technology and politics doesn't interest you, then you can just skip past this thread...

I've been saying for years that the only reason for the automakers put thinner and thinner oils in engines is to help get them past the ridiculous CAFE standards. This video confirms that. The best confirmation is that identical vehicles in other nations have thicker oils specified than here in the states.

I've never bought a bottle of 0W-anything, and I've certainly never poured a bottle of it in any of my vehicles. I run 10w30 in everything I own.

This video is about how GM got bit in the ass by the thinner oils, and how their band-aid to get these vehicles past the warranty period is to use thicker oil.

In addition to recommending extreme viscosity oil to obtain .005 % better mileage at the expense of longevity; the manufacturers recommended excessive high mileage oil change intervals to obtain CAFE credits, also at the cost of reliability and longevity.

It is also a false environmental "gain", if you compare the additional environmental damage of having to replace a vehicle at 150K vs 250K.

Read about this and wondered how GM would spin it

Basically saying well mister our engine specs were wrong but change the oil and any damage might be reversed

New oil cap is the fix.

My comment above S/B "Extremely low viscosity oil".

I run Rotella T6 15w-40 in my diesels and air cooled engines, and Valvoline 5W-30 Restore and Protect in my gassers. Oil filters are Baldwin or WIX.

I was loyal to Wix, but they were bought out by Mann-Hummel, and their quality is not what it was. They're still just as good as just about anything else, but no better. I finally just gave up on trying to keep up with who makes which brands of filters, and I now just buy the Super Tech filters at Wal-Mart. The one brand of filter I will never touch under any circumstances is Fram.

I used the Rotella in my race engines for a while after the automakers spec'd all of the heavy metals (zinc, phosphorous, etc) out of all passenger car oils. Diesel oils still had those additives, but they eventually disappeared from those oils, too. I had to resort to using a pint of engine break in lube with every oil change. Those heavy metals are necessary for the loads placed on flat tappet camshafts. When the heavy metals disappeared from the oil, there was a huge struggle in the racing community with flat camshafts. It bit me once on the first night out on a motor with a brand new cam. In my 28 years of racing, that's the only flat cam I ever had. With the help of some of the motor builders, we finally figured out what was going on. That's when we switched to Rotella for a while. Cam break-in lube is loaded with those heavy metals. A full bottle for the break-in of every new cam, and a half bottle with each oil change was my final solution to the problem.

The automakers spec'd the heavy metals out of oil because congress passed a law mandating that catalytic converters be warrantied for 130,000 miles. The automakers said those heavy metals contaminate catalytic converters, so we'll just spec oil without it. All modern cars have roller camshafts, and they don't need the heavy metals in the oil.

Personally, I use Valvoline Max Life full synthetic 10w30 in both of my trucks (181,000 miles and 168,000 miles), and Valvoline full synthetic 10w30 in our two passenger cars. Those cars are a Chevy Trax with about 80,000 miles and a Jeep Compass with about 53,000 miles. We just assumed ownership of that Compass when my wife's mother passed away last month. I also use Valvoline full synthetic 10w30 in my Honda inverter generator.

Between the removal of Zinc and other additives in motor oil, and Chineseium camshafts and lifters, I am going with a roller cam setup in an old gen 1 350 SBC, it added 1300 bucks to the cost of the rebuild, but hopefully the engine will outlast me. I am getting too old for pulling/installing engines. :|

Many great cam builders no longer exist. Reed was my favorite.

I went with a Howard retro roller kit around .485ish lift at .50, a little more lift than I wanted for a ranch truck engine, but it has a .411 gears and a truck manual four speed.

No live Dodo birds ever existed here in the US.

In fact, they had been exterminated before Europeans even discovered New Zealand.
