It seems to have gone almost unnoticed that this Pope is of mixed race (the first such?) According to Wikipedia his mother had the surname of Martinez and was from New Orleans and of mixed white and African descent, while his father was of Haitian ancestry.

The day that the new Pope was elected, I happened to be watching Jonathan Morris being interviewed on Fox. When asked who he thought was a likely choice, he mentioned one other person, and then suggested Prevost as a strong possibility, and mentioned Pope Francis's mentorship, and the fact that, although American, he has spent a significant amount of time in other countries and is a polyglot.

A semi-major controversy on various social media now is that some claim Leo is the SECOND American Pope, because Francis was from Argentina. They say anyone from North or South America, while usually calling them just one single continent, is also American. They call us USAians, USonians or some such bullshit. Also, for some reason, some like to emphasize his Mother's mixed race ancestry, but don't say as much about his Father's. Hmmmm.
