Probably not big and heavy enough to cause serious structural damage.

It was the sailing ship "Cuahtémoc", with tall masts that didn't quite clear the bridge. Some Mexican sailors injured when rigging crashed down to the deck.

A bad peace inevitably leads to a worse war.

This ship actually hit the bridge stern first from apparent loss of propulsion control after getting underway from a berth (the ship was not under sail). The ship was planning to proceed south on the East River and the bridge was in the opposite direction. Crewmen were stationed on the masts as part of the show.

If you are interested in getting into the nautical weeds on this, Sal Mercagliano has a very good update on the incident as of Sunday afternoon:

Very interesting YT video. I just assumed the ship had wooden masts, even tho it is a modern ship.

Oh, come on. He made that comment before we knew anyone had died. I'm not sure we even knew that anyone had been seriously injured at that point.

In 2021 something similar happened with a Brazilian tall ship hitting a bridge in Equador.

So? That’s supposed to make his stupid comment acceptable?

Never let an opportunity go to waste . . .

Schumer bizarrely claims DOGE may have been partly to blame for Mexican ship’s deadly Brooklyn Bridge mishap

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday bizarrely suggested that DOGE cuts to the US Coast Guard could have been partly to blame for a Mexican tall ship’s deadly collision with the Brooklyn Bridge.

“We know there has been meddling by the Trump administration into USCG staffing, and we need to know how this might have impacted the events of last night — from a command, communication and local coordination level,” the embattled Dem said in a press release.

“There are indications that this service [Vehicle Traffic System] may not be fully or adequately functional in light of a hiring freeze,” he said — referring to what he described as the Coast Guard’s “FAA-like traffic control operation.”

“If this were the case, the Brooklyn Bridge accident would be a national harbinger, demanding immediate attention,” the pol said.

But there were no reports of any other ship being involved in any way in Saturday’s tragedy.

Sources have said the Mexican sailing ship Cuauhtemoc struck the bridge because a mechanical failure shut down its steering, leaving it at the mercy of East River currents that pulled the vessel into the historic bridge, killing two navy cadets and injuring at least 17 others.

Naturally, more funding would have prevented the Mexican ship from having mechanical failure.

The President of Mexico came right out and explained why no one in our Government had anything to do with this.
