Indian Congressional Leader on Terrorist Attack

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar who never fails to cause embarrassment to the party has once again created a row with his latest remark where he has justified the Paris terror attack and the killings of cartoonists of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The out-spoken Mani Shankar Aiyar told Times Now in a debate that such attacks were imminent as the “powerless” people were retaliating.

He reportedly stated: “We have to admit that ever since there has been a war on terror after 9/11, many innocent Muslims have lost their lives. This is what America did in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is therefore only to be expected that there will be a backlash. Countries like America can’t do what they want just because they are powerful. Why should just powerful countries act this way? Why should those who are less powerful not respond? Powerless people will find powerless means of responding, when there are drone attacks.”

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar is no stranger to controversy. Aiyar has been a constant critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and during the 2014 elections, Aiyar caused a stir by saying, reportedly, at a party event: “We have 14 lakh elected women and we must connect them all together. If all these women unite, then Modi-ji will have to return to Gandhinagar, and then can proceed to the sea”. Then he was widely criticised for saying that a tea seller cannot become Prime Minister – a jibe aimed at the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

Aiyar’s latest comments left the Congress red-faced as the party had strongly condemned the attack. The embarrassed party was quick to distance itself from his remarks stating that it is his own view. The Congress party is facing tough times of-late. It’s Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is facing the heat over the revelations that his wife Sunanda Pushkar was murdered and now comes this shocker of a remark from Aiyar.
