I wonder why Greg Abbot doesn't use a ...

Postby glenn/dallas » Wed Jan 21, 2015 11:46 am

Motorized Scooter rather than the wheelchair he does use. After his accident with the falling tree branch , financially, he is set for life. His annual annuity started around $300 k per year and and graduates up yearly. This year it will be just over one million dollars. Seems to me it would be much easier to get around, keep up with a walking crowd he might be with. So many things say to me go with the very affordable electric scooter. Brand new, they start at around $600.00 and go up to up to $4,000+ for one with all the bells and whistles. Running out of juice isnt a problem, the better ones have a range of close to 30 miles.

I just dont understand, anyone have a idea he uses the old wheelchair vs the better options ? FYI-I like the man just dont understand this one thing about him.

Don't know Greg's reason but for my wheelchair bound Dad it was about controlling what he could and having the strength necessary to get himself around. Arm exercise is better than no exercise at all. My Dad didn't like anyone to take over pushing him unless the incline was so steep he couldn't handle it alone.

I pretty much agree with Sue. Combination of stubbornness, independence, pride and being healthy.

He was an active person before his accident and I imagine he wants to hold onto as much of that as he can. Also, he doesn't have to worry about looking completely helpless if a battery craps out.

Remember FDR? He wouldn't even be SEEN in public using a wheelchair. His legs were pretty useless from what I could tell. Don't know how he managed those metal braces that held him up....

My Dad wore those full leg steel braces for several years after he contracted Polio. They were heavy and awkward. The hinges had to be frequently lubricated. The only way to use them was to put weight on the crutches and swing both legs forward at the same time. There was a catch at the knee that had to be released in order to sit down. Awful devices. Daddy was so proud when he graduated from those to a knee brace only.

I saw a quick snippet of film of FDR walking with those braces. He moved just like my Dad did............I guess just like they all did.

I watched the whole FDR documentary on Channel 13. He was so sick during his last election and last term. He really had no business running that last time.

I would think it also has to do with maneuverability. A motorized wheelchair has limits and weighs a ton.

I have a dear friend who lost both legs in Granada due to friendly fire by the Navy. Within 2 minutes he was shot in the arm (Russian) and hit by the Navy's missle that took his legs. No prosthetic legs are possible since there's not enough structure left. He refuses an electric wheel chair. His upper body strength is amazing. The thing that infuriates me is that when his wheel chair needs a part, it sometimes takes VA 1 year to get it to him. Same with the hand controls on his truck. He bought it in Nov. and couldn't drive it till May! I have a video of him using a rotor-tiller in his garden. His arms are massive.

"An everyday, average power wheelchair can weigh anywhere from 150lbs to 250lbs. The largest heavy duty chair can weigh up to 350lbs-400lbs.

They hardly weigh a TON according to a Hoveround article I found. For contrast, a Honda Gold Wing Cruiser ( thats a big kike) only weight around 925 lbs.

Non-motorized wheelchair weigh between 12-30 lbs for the most part. To a person with a disability that requires them to be in a wheelchair 150 pounds can feel like "a ton" compared to 12 pounds.

YMMV

And it can be a huge difference for the person who has to help them get in and out of a vehicle, etc.

Mrs. Toes went to school at Highland Park, where "tons" indicated a significantly larger amount. (EX: "She's TONS smarter than him, but he keeps arguing with her anyway.")
