The Saga of Hana Belmont

The letters are etched into the rock of the cave wall. It seems to have been done very carefully, but by hand, with a laser cutter designed for metal and carbon.

The text reads: “I am Hana Belmont, Engineer of the Holy Syndicate vessel 606 Mendoza, crashed on this planet 06.06.592. Tora Hakuin, Exobiologist, and I jetissoned in upper atmosphere and made planetfall on this continent’s eastern shore. We trekked a year to find the wreck of the Mendoza. We were the only survivors. We built the hut in the valley 2400 meters NE of this position. We lived here six local years, awaiting recovery, scavenging parts from the Mendoza wreck. In the second moon of the sixth spring,Tora died from an ice lizard bite. I buried her under the cairn on the mound facing the North Sea. In the third moon of the eighth summer, I managed to repair a salvaged hypersleep pod and install it in the next chamber of this cave. I estimate its power source can last me five hundred and sixty standard years, approximately. Traveller, if you have found me, have care, for my world is long gone. You wake me from winter.”

In the next chamber, the pod sits among the stalagmites. Its power source is cold.

But the pod is empty.
