Busted.

But I'll tell you a true story. There were nights I just wanted to go into town, drink some lukewarm San Miguel, and listen to yet another rendition of the Filipino National Anthem, aka Smoke on the Water.

When the bar girls started to swarm I would tell them that I was the ship's Catholic chaplain. The reactions I would get were priceless.

My best friend fell in love with one of those girls and ended up marrying her.
They now live in Rochester, NY and have a bunch of kids and grandkids. You just never know how things will turn out.

Marriages to bar girls seem to have a pretty good success rate, particularly among the more senior enlisted. I would give my suspicions why that is, but in the 21st century it would be considered racist.

Not Red River, but the age and the church camp scenario sure does sound familar to me. ;)

Reason #100 on why being a chaperone/sponsor at a church youth camp is NOT an activity I wish to perform.

I remember the first time I went to Red River NM. That is a neat little town.

I think it was 1982.

1. There was one boy in my cabin whose only reason for being there was to hook up with a girl. Any girl. He made it obvious.
2. As the others were dozing off one night, he cranked up a song on his boom box and the opening lyrics were "One, two, f*** you!"
3. I laid awake every night and made really sure this kid was asleep before I allowed myself the luxury of sleeping. I didn't sleep much.
4. Pool hall levels of profanity from some of the kids from other churches.
5. I broke up an unauthorized meeting in the woods between groups of boys and girls. Our boys were very disappointed with me over that.
