Male Tiger Swallowtail butterfly
Never seen them out here before. Have two of them in the flowers out front. Pretty impressive.

Love them.
Ours like to stay on the creek in the trees.

I don't know why we don't have them out here. One of our creeks is about 60 yards behind our house.

The host plant (plant needed for the caterpillars) is a Sweet Bay Magnolia or a Tulip Popular tree.
On the map in my butterfly book, we are on the edge of their "natural area" and that would be another reason they are not seen so much.

My lantanas attract quite a few different species of butterflies too.

This is an excellent source for information about butterflies in this area: http://dallasbutterflies.com/
The Butterfly Gardening section has a lot of information about host and nectar plants.
