Free $50 gift cards- no joke

Several weeks ago I went to a large national retailer's website to send a gift card as a birthday gift to a relative.
I sent a $50 gift card to the person's email address- gave my credit card info etc.
A few minutes later I received an email saying the transaction had been canceled because the recipient's email address I had given was invalid.
A minute later I received an email saying the gift card had been delivered.
I called customer service and was told the transaction had been aborted and to try again.
I did- same results.
I waited a couple of days, checked and my CC had not been billed. Called customer service again- "sorry, try again..."
Meanwhile the person I gave it to thanked me and told me $100 in gift cards was too much- I shouldn't have.
The person used the cards- they were honored and my CC was never billed.
I guess the Bangladesh customer service person didn't understand what I was telling him. I tried.
