To put it in terms we might visualize...
If we used thousand dollar bills (no longer made)
a million dollars in thousands would stack up to 4 inches high.
a billion would stack up 300 feet high
a trillion would go 63 miles into space............
!!!!!
(This according to Ross Perot's data)

And we are 23 times that in debt.
ETA: Both political parties are guilty of not giving a damn about the debt and deficit. There are a few individual politicians that try to do something about it, but both parties as entities thrive on buying votes with borrowed dollars.
This is not a partisan issue. This is an American issue, and the politicians on both sides of the aisle need to be held to account.

Mark, I agree. At one time the Rs worked on budget and threw caution to the wind.
No one seems to think about "you are bankrupting our country"
I'm old I hope I die before it all comes to pass.

I had to do the math .
4 inches is about right for a 1000 bills, strapped tightly. 1000 x 1000 = a million dollars
4 inches ( a million) x 1000 (billion) is 4000 inches = 333 feet
333 feet (a billion) x 1000 (trillion) is 333,333 feet divided by 5287 feet is 63.94 miles
Amazing.
I hate that as a country we are racking up more debt. Both political parties need to own up that the running deficits is a recipe for disaster. No more lip service, no more pork.
