Perhaps the wildlife is a bit different there, but here..possums hiss but are totally harmless.

Raccoons are nasty and quite deadly for small pets..ditto for coyotes.

I think for the most part the possum hiss is to scare off the enemy.

However, if pressed to it, a possum's teeth are pretty effective against another animal. A well placed coyote bite could finish off a smaller animal.

Either the coyote could not be bothered --or both figured "there is enough dog food here for both of us."
