Bonus points if you guessed an armed security guard saved the day.

Two armed robbers held up a television news crew that was interviewing Oakland's director of violence prevention outside City Hall on Monday afternoon, just hours after the police chief warned of worsening crime amid cuts to the police budget.

Can you explain how defunding the police relates to this? And I'm not signing up through the pay wall, so I can't read the story. Your own words please.

I'm SMH that it's even necessary to explain this to a grown man, but telling criminals that there is a reduced police presence (and that criminals will not be aggressively prosecuted) results in more crime. Crimes such as armed robbers holding up a television crew interviewing a city's director of violence prevention outside City Hall, for example. But, it's probably just because you didn't read the article...

Oakland CA just increased the $ amount to fund the police. That $ amount is a smaller % of the city budget than the prior two year budget.

That's a bit misleading. The city council hacked $18,000,000 from the mayor's proposed budget.

So your saying the $$$ increase would been $18,000,000 more than the $$$ increase in the new budget ?

Like the Democratic mayor of Oakland?

"Mayor Libby Schaaf praised the council’s “bold investments to reimagine public safety through violence prevention and non-police strategies,” but she also said that, in her view, the new budget will “destroy” the city’s existing public safety system, which is based on police patrols and 911 response.

“Unfortunately, it also cuts 50 police officers who respond to Oaklanders’ 911 calls and enforce traffic safety. It also cuts much-needed future academies, which will significantly reduce police staffing and delay response to Oaklanders in their time of crisis,” Schaaf said in a press release sent immediately after the council vote. “It will force our officers to work even more overtime shifts, which are expensive and unsafe for officers and residents alike.”"

It's funny that Democrats are always happy to use baseline budgeting to claim that a 5% increase instead of a 10% increase is a "drastic 50% slash". But when Democrats go after a budget, chopping 2/3rd out of a 4% increase, it's just dandy.

Again, intentionally misleading: the percentage of the budget decreased 10%.

Yeah, that's all great, but as anyone can plainly see, my response above was to rusty. In any case, I don't know if you have ever dealt with budgets in a bureaucracy, but I have. Large sections of the budget are earmarked for specific uses, and as the mayor has indicated in her statement, the money that has been cut from the police budget affects 911 calls. Cutting 2/3rds of an already-planned increase in a budget is a big deal. Things are not always simple.

It's amazing how the idiots on the Left are now trying to run away from their "Defund the police, All cops are bastards, Abolish the police" battle cry of the past 12 months.

They're wearing out their Alinsky tactic of "Accuse your political enemy of doing what you do," and Americans are catching on to their bullshit.
