I heard it again

This bugs me.
I've heard this type of thing a lot.
On tonight's news they were talking about a car with "four African-American males" in it that was seen doing something wrong- I don't remember what.
How do they know they were Americans? They could be visitors from Nigeria.

The stupidest I ever heard was on the old Nightline show.
A woman described the South African Negro population as the African-American South Africans.

I heard someone on TV several years ago mention "African-Americans from all over the world". Only here in America are people hyphenated.

IIRC, at the Olympics one year, the American announcers stumbled all over themselves as to what to call a black Olympian from France....tried to call her AA and realized that wasn't correct and yet were afraid to cal her a black person.

During the O.J. Simpson trial a forensic expert testified that the hair of an African-American was found at the crime scene.
You can look at a hair and determine race. How can you look at one and determine nationality?

Even trained people who know better that this, get caught up in it.
