I know I'm swimming against the tide but I have always liked The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Great songwriting.

It’s the same cheesy 4 bars over and over.

..with the same cheesy melody.

Yeah, a lot of pickers said it was the most boring song there was to play.

"Gordon Lightfoot writes perfect songs. I couldn’t write like him, I’d be dead by now. The way Gordon writes, he’d literally lock himself into a hotel room – sort of like that scene from Apocalypse Now. To do that every time you have to go make a record. That would have killed me» – Bob Dylan, 1989

After hearing it once or twice it began to get on my nerves, a very monotonous song. But nothing like having to listen to Waylon Jennings bleating on and on about Luchenback, Texas.

That's what guitar pickers say too. But, the priority was to tell the story accurately.
I think "Luchenback" is masterful song writing. Never bored me. Do you know who "Newberry" that wrote train songs was?

Wikipedia tells me he was Mickey Newbury, supposedly one of the greatest of country songwriters although no song they listed rang a bell with me. It also said that Waylon said he disliked the song from the first and always did.

Mickey Newbury, who was from Houston, released an album, I can't find a date on it, called "Looks Like Rain". It was a "concept" album. All very sad songs. Between the tracks was a short interlude of rain and train sounds and a short refrain by "The Mystic Blues Orchestra". The whole effect was real errie, but beautiful. One of my favorites to pull out on a rainy night. But, your right, he had no big hits.
