NFL pushed Michael Sam

Here's a report that the NFL called around trying to get a team to take Michael Sam on it's practice squad after he was cut by the Rams.
Jerry Jones, of course obliged.
Why would the NFL do this? Did they do it for anyone else? What exactly are they trying to promote?

I'm not surprised. NFL hid the agreement with Oprah before the draft, imo because no team would draft or sign him knowing cameras and Oprah would be part of the package.
