The damage done to Donald Trump and his family by his oldest son's testimony Thursday cannot be overstated, a legal expert said.
Donald Trump Jr., while testifying in the fraud trial into this family's business Thursday, said he couldn't remember details regarding several documents he was shown in court — adding that he relied on the Trump Organization's accountants and legal department to handle such matters.
Trump Jr. was then asked about a 2017 loan document from Deutsche Bank which he signed identifying himself as "attorney in fact," which he said he didn't recall signing. He also claimed to have no knowledge of the organization's financial statements.
“As a trustee, I have an obligation to listen to those who are expert — who have an expertise of these things,” he said.
“I wasn’t working on the document, but if they tell me that it’s accurate, based on their accounting assessment of all of the materials,” he said, “these people had an incredible intimate knowledge, and I relied on them.”
In a tweet this Thursday, MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin said that she "cannot overstate how damaging these admissions are for Trump Jr., as pleasant and relatively yawn-inducing as this review of financial documents sounds.
"Not only does the AG take issue with the veracity of those representations, but the fact that Trump Jr. signed it, after this investigation is underway, without having more than a cursory discussion with the same accountants to whom the representations were made is stunning," she wrote.
