What you do at work

The DOGE committee has sent out emails to every employee of the federal government asking each employee to reply (and to copy in their immediate managers) to the email with about five bullet points of things they accomplished on the job in the previous week. The email also states that a failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.

There is a significant amount of discussion about this on Twitter. Here is one comment Elon Musk made in response to one of these discussions:

The reason this matters is that a significant number of people who are supposed to be working for the government are doing so little work that they are not checking their email at all!

In some cases, we believe non-existent people or the identities of dead people are being used to collect paychecks. In other words, there is outright fraud.

Giving your boss status reports. What a concept.

But who is going to screen all of these emails?

A great way to get rid of lots of freeloaders who probably never open their e-mails.

Yup really stupid.

Imagine being held responsible for the consequences of your own actions.

For the first time government employees are being expected to be efficient

And they scream bloody murder.

I can tell anybody in management at any time what my activities were for any day in the past 10 years...

About 10 years ago, some clueless management types at the private sector company that employs me started going on these witch hunts, where they would accuse employees of doing nothing on a particular day because they couldn't see those activities on whatever particular spreadsheet they were looking at. That was when I started keeping records of my every action on a monthly spreadsheet.

Reciting five things you accomplished in the past week should never be a problem for any employee of any entity anywhere. That's one thing per day.

Anybody that criticizes the effort to weed out those that have been ripping off the taxpayers has a screw loose.

A whole lot of your co-workers would help you pack.

If we're really lucky, that's what 90% of government employees will do.

Periodically, we would have to document what we did every day for a week in 15-minute increments for Medicaid. I didn't tell anyone to GFY, I just did it.

Every year at my annual review I would get goals for the next year. Every week I had to submit a productivity report that broke every hour into 15 minute segments and charted which of my goals I worked on during that segment. It sucked but that was the job.

I had to fill one of these out every work day for several years. Switching to an EOBR was, in some ways easier, but a bigger pain in the ass in others.

Did they send it to the military employees of the govt? Will they be kicked out if they don't respond?

You've said that a few times. What, exactly, do you find stupid about accountability?

It's not about accountability, it's about stupidity.
