What To Know
The interaction sparked fury from American observers but was celebrated almost immediately by Russian state media outlets and supporters of Putin.
Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and prime minister of Russia who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, wrote on Telegram: "A fierce dressing down in the Oval Office. Trump told the cocaine clown the truth to his face for the first time: the Kiev regime is playing with World War III. And the ungrateful pig got a solid slap from the pigsty owners. This is useful. But it is not enough – we need to stop military aid to the Nazi machine."
The state-controlled media outlet RT characterized the Trump-Zelensky meeting as a dressing down, writing on X: "Zelensky sits with hands between legs as US President and VP hammer him."
Earlier Friday, the White House kicked a reporter from the Russian state news agency TASS out of the Oval Office.
"TASS was not on the approved list of media for today's pool," a White House official told Newsweek. "As soon as it came to the attention of press office staff that he was in the Oval, he was escorted out by the Press Secretary."
TASS, for its part, published a number of articles characterizing Zelensky as rude and ineffectual.
The outlet also appeared to leave unanswered the question of whether the U.S. sides with Ukraine over Russia.
"Zelensky rehashed his usual accusations against Russia," one article on the TASS website said. "Asked if he believed in further support from the US, he tried to give Trump an opportunity to answer, which Trump ignored. Zelensky then began to say that the US is on the side of Ukraine, but Trump left that statement without comment."
Friday's meeting between Trump and Zelensky came after Trump stunned Ukraine and its European allies this month when he opened a dialogue with Putin about ending the war without including Zelensky in the conversation.
Trump also falsely claimed that Ukraine started the war and called Zelensky a "dictator."
Zelensky responded by saying that Trump lives in a "disinformation" universe and accused him of parroting Russian talking points.
The U.S. president has said he wants to sign a deal with Zelensky in which Ukraine will turn over half its revenues from rare-earth minerals. The latest draft of the deal did not include any security guarantees on the U.S.'s part. A White House official told Newsweek on Friday that the deal hasn't yet been signed.
Zelensky issued a statement following his meeting with Trump and Vance, saying on X: "Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that."
British television host and longtime Trump backer Piers Morgan wrote on X: "The only winner from today's Oval Office debacle is Vladimir Putin... and anyone who thinks that is a good thing for the world is stunningly deluded."
