Wow we were poor

The conversation went like this,

What did you eat when you were a kid?

As I remember we were in a food desert

!0 miles from the nearest store and no convenience stores in the late 50's

My grandmother didn't drive

We had a milkman and raised chickens, and a large garden and root cellar

We canned vegetables, jellies and pickles, made sauerkraut.

Some nights we had a little meat, I remember eating a lot of eggs.

Supper almost always included bread of some kind and white gravy

No TV

How did we ever make it?

Sounds like you were not necessarily “poor”..but certainly had a simple life..which was not such a bad thing.

Most people in town had a garden. Some raised chickens. My in-laws lived about 10 miles from town. She fried the best chicken I ever tasted. :D

When I was a widdle kid, I thought we were getting poor because Dad traded in the family 1953 Chrysler Imperial for a 1957 Oldsmoblie Fiesta 88 hardtop station wagon with hand-crank windows. Even in our 6 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with acreage, I had to share a bedroom with my little brother. Yeah, I had it rough as a real Leave It To Beaver kid.

In our 3-bedroom house, I shared a room with my 3 brothers. Sister had her own room.

My old neighborhood looks today exactly as it did when I was growing up. Except most don't have vegetable gardens. I lived across the street from school and I was late most days. :D
