Heartwarming story.

90 year old war veteran Bernard Jordon lives in a care home. He believed the care home officials had denied him permission to go to Normandy to join in with his remaining comrades for the d'day commemorations, so he simply took himself off and went quietly by himself....without telling anyone.

Just shows that the body may age but the spirit lives on....I love Bernard.

I love this story. That IS why they are called "The Greatest Generation".

They went through so much.
I find it heartwarming to see the spirit many of these now very elderly people still have, sometimes it's overlooked....but it's still there, as Bernard has proven....he has made the front pages on many of the papers here today.

But if that is the case there could be a legitimate reason for it. My mother is in an assisted living facility, which is covered by insurance. If she spends the night away from the facility, insurance will not pay for her care for that day because she didn't use it.

From what I have heard on the radio the care home tried to arrange a place for Bernard to go to Normandy on an organised coach/boat trip, but they left it too late to secure him a place. He believed they had refused permission, so he just took himself off.

There is a lot of red tape when someone is in a care home because obviously they are responsible for looking after the residents.
When my mum was in a residential home one of the residents would take every opportunity to 'escape'. He caused problems in the summertime because all the doors had to be kept locked else he would have bolted.
