Technology help needed....

I need to reinstall some software (my scanner program).
Can I just reinstall over the old, or do I need to uninstall first and then reinstall?

(When I tried scanning this AM, it gave me error message and said the cure was restarting my computer or reinstalling the program. Restarting computer didn't heal it.)

I always do an uninstall before a reinstall. Whenever you install directly over the old program, the potential exists for bits and pieces of the old program to interfere with the new install.
