Kid penalized for praying in end zone

Postby BillB » Fri Nov 07, 2014 5:30 pm

Sam Turner scored a touchdown.

Sam raised his hands in the air to honor a murdered teammate and then took a knee to thank God. The end zone celebrated lasted about five seconds.

“I felt like I had to thank God for blessing me with the talent and passion to play football,” Sam told me. “So I dropped to a knee and thanked God for everything he’s done in my life.”

But when Sam opened his eyes he saw a referee throwing a flag.

Unsportsmanlike conduct. A 15-yard penalty.

The kid is getting a lot of sympathy. There is a general outrage against the referee about what happened.

If Sam wants to be a Christian, he might spend some time reading his Bible.

Matthew 6: 5-6
5"When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

good point , yeah , don't make a show !! Still , if the kid wants to make a show I have no problem with it except that I guess its against the school rules . So , I'd say that the schools rules are wrong !!

The football players in my high school class were so religious that they are still referred to as the "Holy Rollers" by some, but I never recall any of them making a public display of their religiosity during a game. Privately, and in the locker room, was a different matter (I played on the JV, but not the varsity)

I have a bit of sympathy, but let's look at the big picture. The NCAA rule is that no player is to have any sort of whatever you want to call it, a war dance, a corrigraphed dance, jig, wiggle or whatever.
For years we have had kids with white shoes, striped shoes, long socks, no socks, the gloves are the latest, when you put them together they have everything from f*#}# you to I nailed your mother. We about have the throat slash beat back and along comes the twerk garbage.
Officials have no problem with prayer, in fact I'd bet 99 percent of the ref's have a prayer before taking the field. We are not the most hip or cool people to come along so what we see that is a bit off, we flag not knowing the meaning. If anything after a score was done away with, our job would be great. Till then we are the censor, we don't know porn until we see it.
