She tells People mag, in dealing with racism,oh the horror "it happens"

“I tell this story – I mean, even as the first lady – during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn’t see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn’t anything new.”

But she told Letterman this in 2012

MICHELLE OBAMA: I thought I was undercover. I have to tell you something about this trip though. No one knew that was me because a woman actually walked up to me, right? I was in the detergent aisle, and she said — I kid you not — she said, "Excuse me, I just have to ask you something," and I thought, "Oh, cover’s blown." She said, "Can you reach on that shelf and hand me the detergent?" I kid you not…And the only thing she said — I reached up, ’cause she was short, and I reached up, pulled it down — she said, "Well, you didn’t have to make it look so easy." That was my interaction. I felt so good. ... She had no idea who I was. I thought, as soon as she walked up — I was with my assistant, and I said, ‘This is it, it’s over. We’re going to have to leave.’ She just needed the detergent.

The real story here..is that these scummy elitists think that being a Target employee or Valet are each something to be ashamed of.

I have often been asked by someone to help them get something off a shelf while shopping. Sometimes the person is more disabled than I am and mostly women that are too short
to reach the item. Michell can pound salt!

went to a Walmart , I'm 65 and probably look like a greeter when I stand at the door which I was doing as I waited for my wife to get a cart . Pretty funny , I was standing there with a blue t shirt on and a lady walks up and starts talking to me about returning something . I laughed , we laughed as I told her that I didn't work there . It was funny . Other times people ask me to get something for them because I'm tall . Sometimes I offer to get something for a fumbling and reaching short person , once again because I'm tall .

I had only seen the anecdote as she told it to Letterman and I wondered what all the brouhaha was about. Now I see.

I remember once when my mom asked me to reach up and grab a bowl off the top of the kitchen cabinet. I easily snagged the bowl, and then she commented, "That's why I had tall sons."

Racist.

+1 Also, they think they are special. GW or Laura Bush would have just helped the people and wouldn't have thought another thing about it. They certainly wouldn't have put it in any special self-serving context.

The day I read this, I'd been to Kroger. I was reading the labels of coconut oil and they were on the top shelf. Two people came by and asked if they could get something down for me. Our Kroger has expanded and remodeled. Everyone is confused about where things are NOW! Even the employees are stumped sometimes. They do try to help you but the thing I like is customers helping each other. One lady circled back to the aisle I was on and told me she'd found what I wanted. Heh! One young man was stocking and I asked if he was the gremlin that moved the microwave bacon. Since he was young I didn't know if he would be offended. Instead, he burst out laughing and admitted he was the gremlin and took me to where they'd relocated it from a few days before.
