Black eyed peas

Postby crocmommy » Wed Dec 31, 2014 12:23 pm

Has anyone gone out to buy theirs today? Are they going to be hard to find? I looked a few days before Christmas at Kroger and the canned peas were all gone already. I guess I'll check Target here in Ft Worth on my way home from the office.

Dried are a good way to go. Soak them overnight. I think they also have them frozen. Either way beats the heck out of canned.

One of the first things I learned at the old DD site, was that in Texas, even white folks eat black eyed peas.

Seriously, before that I knew of them as something one finds at a soul food restaurant, or eating at black friend's houses.

..and I guess they have New Years significance as well.

They are supposed to bring you luck Greg. I am hoping to find frozen peas. Canned aren't my favorites either.

Well, we all need a bit of luck!

I think the Yankee thing was..corned beef and cabbage. My wife is modifying that into a pork loin and cabbage.

I do love cabbage!

Many years ago I learned the hard way to purchase them prior to Christmas, because the stores are sold out come NYE.

We have some in the freezer and a package of dry.

Our Walmart was out of dried blackeyed peas today.
We found some at Kroger's.

Back in my days of being with Meal A Day there were some very definite and strong opinions (country folks do love their black eyes) about how BEPs should be properly cooked and having plenty of "pot liquor" was a very important point. They always turned out great there. We just put them in the big ol' pots and boiled the snot out of them for about 3 hours.

I keep canned in the pantry all the time also. Ranch style, thank you. I don't like watery peas. I agree with my former volunteers that they need to have plenty of liquor.

The last few times I've done dried BEPs I've done them in the crock pot. No presoaking needed. I also have cooked them in the pressure cooker. That's what I'll do this evening because I failed to put them in the crock pot at noon.

Regular soaking then cooking in a pot has never worked satisfactorily for me. They just never seem to get done no matter how long and how hard I boil them and I've never figured out why.

Greg, my Mom (originally from W VA) used to not think BEPs were food for human beings either. But she did used to eat them when my Dad fixed them. I doubt she has had any since my Dad died.

I have reserved about a third of the peas so I can make Texas Caviar this afternoon.

Of all the many varieties of what are called field pies (purple hulls, crowders, etc.) black eyes are the worst.

I had never seen or heard of crowders (or as they call 'em out here cream peas) or purple hulls till we moved to East Texas and I worked at a nursery which sold all types of peas. We just didn't have those things in Austin. I've tried them all but really don't care for of any of them except black eyes.

Purple hulls and Crowder need a little more water to grow in my experience.

Can you translate those into "Yankee?"
