Lattice Multiplication - TOTAL IDIOCY!!!

Postby grouchy » Wed Jan 07, 2015 7:10 pm

We have Trey, our 4th grader with us tonight. He is a darn smart kid.
He has been introduced to "lattice multiplication" this week. Sorry folks, it is pure bs. Sometime
old school is best. Google it.

Sounds like more common core goofyness. I have looked at some of this carp and it is much more confusing than the old fashioned way. 21 steps to get to the same answer as opposed to 3 steps the old way.
It's a joke son,I say a joke

Yep!
Karen tells me that this type of thing works best for the kids with learning difficulties. I am glad for
them, and it does not hurt for the regular kids to learn an alternative method. But, I do prefer the
old school approach.

Wikipedia says it's a very old method, so Common Core might not have anything to do with it. But I wouldn't be surprised. It looks to me like you still have to know how to multiply to know what numbers to put inside the lattice. If you know how to do that, then what's the point?

I read wiki and failed to grasp the concept so I watched youtube.

Still fail to grasp the need to make it harder for the majority of students.

It's ok if you disagree with me.
I can't force you to be right.
