On Monday’s broadcast of “The O’Reilly Factor” on the Fox News Channel, retired Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer of the London Center for Policy Research revealed to host Bill O’Reilly that sources tell him U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will face charges for desertion.
Bergdahl was held captive by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Afghanistan from June 2009 until his release in May 2014, which was part of a prisoner exchange for five Taliban members who were being held at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
“Bill, the Army has come to its conclusion and Bowe Bergdahl,” Shaffer said, “Sgt. Bergdahl will be charged with desertion. I have been told and confirmed by two other sources that his attorney was given what we call a charge sheet. A charge sheet is results of the investigation listing out the articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice that have been violated. The key violation is desertion. And this is has been done. The decision has been made. Let me be very clear. As a corporate entity, the Army has decided that they want to pursue Bergdahl for this violation.”

Can range up to death, at least it could when I was in. Battle field desertion is a SERIOUS thing!

I think the last time it was punished by execution was during WW 2. If I am wrong someone will post the correct information.

Yes, that was the famous case of Eddy Slovak. Supposedly the last time before that that a U. S. service member was executed for a "purely military offense" was in 1864. In WWI the U. K. executed at least several dozen for desertion, and I have read that the Germans executed the equivalent of a division in WWII.

Slovik repeatedly said he was a coward & would desert again.
IMO, Bergdahl should be considered a deserter & defector.

He'll be charged with leaving his post and sentenced to 5 years less time served.

On my travels to the coast, I go through Cameron. Hwy 77 through Cameron is dedicated to Darryl Andrews the 2 Lt who was killed while on a mission searching for Bergdahl. It always makes the rest of the trip rather somber because I think of his family and friends. He grew up in Cameron. I saw his parents interviewed on TV last night. I hope Bergdahl spends the rest of his life in prison. But I don't think with this POTUS anything serious would happen to him.
