Both March 2 and April 21 were state holidays "back in the day."

Thank you. I knew their house was on 19th street, facing the fountain, but couldn't remember the fraternity name. How did you know who I was talking about, Tex? Did you go to school in Austin, or live there at some time?

The story goes that many years ago during the noon March 2 celebration on the main mall they fired the cannon, which was pointed in the general direction of the Kappa Sig house on 19th. One of the Kappa Sigs crawled out on the roof waving a white sheet as a sign of surrender. One thing led to another and in subsequent years it became a fraternity event with all the members on the roof wearing serapes and sombreros waving Mexican flags. Property around the campus became too valuable and eventually the Kappa Sigs sold their house and moved over to the west side, ending the tradition.

Of course, political correctness would have killed it anyway.

Yeah, I'd heard that story but had forgotten it. It was quite the event every year.
