If you do genealogy searches...a survey for you

I am in the iSchool MLIS program at San Jose State University, and I’m researching current technologies that genealogists use to conduct research. Participation is anonymous & open to anyone 18+, with an emphasis on American genealogists (but you may reside anywhere in the world). There are approx. 27 multiple choice questions, and will take approx. 15 minutes to complete. The survey will remain open until the morning of Mon. April 27, 2015.

My sister, occasionally assisted by me, used to do a lot of genealogy. Neither of us has had time for it in years. We took some fun trips for genealogy research. I miss those times.

The free LDS (Mormon) website is a great resource.
I found a lot of my family there that I couldn't find anywhere else.
If you add a deceased person they don't have, to build a family tree, (which you will need to do), the church will do their baptism of the dead on them.
It doesn't bother me, but if it would bother you, don't use it.

We have found a lot of erroneous information on the Morman site. It's better than nothing but I don't think anyone should rely on it to be 100% accurate.

I started genealogy when I retired in 1995. I bought my first computer with Win 3.1 and spent a couple days every week at the downtown Dallas library which had the US cenus on microfilm. I joined the Dallas Genealogy Society. The library was interesting because that is where the homeless people hangout, especially on cold and rainy days. Spent many many hours there grinding away on the microfilm readers looking for people. Now, I can use two different sets of the census from my computer at home. I wrote a book on my father's family and organized a "once in a lifetime" family reunion in Iowa. Almost 40 people attended from as far away as California. Now, I have a website on Heritage Quest that has all of my research and all of the photos I have collected. I got into genealogy at just the right time when nobody had done any research. I found a lot of interesting facts. Jessie James is my 3rd cousin, 4 times removed. My 3rd gt. grandparents in Pennsylvania had 18 children and 100 grandchildren! Their oldest, my 2nd gt. grandfather, married 4 times and had 19 children! It was a lot of families to research.

I am not a direct descendant of Jesse & Frank, but I am a direct descendant of one of their Cousins.

The James branch of my family relocated to North Texas shortly after the War of Northern Aggression because they were "Burnt Out" by the Damn Yankee Jayhawker SOBs.

Quantrill & Anderson often wintered in North Texas during the War, and I suspect some alliances were created during this time, that lead to quite a few Missouri Partisan Rangers and their families relocating to North Texas.

I found out on the Mormon web site, that some of my ancestors were a bunch of Cherokee Indians.
That was several generations ago and only on one side of the family.
I probably don't even have 2% of Indian blood.
I thought it was ironic because I have always been dubious of people claiming Indian blood.

Jessie's grandmother, Sarah "Sallie" Lindsey, was the grandaughter of Anthony Lindsey Jr and Rachael Ann Dorsey who were my 6th great grandparants.

It doesn't really matter to me. This is the first time I've mentioned it to anyone outside the family, and probably the last.

My sister had one of these done. Found out we are pure Scots, English, and Irish with no other blood in the mix. I found it to be boring.
