Spammers - Love/Hate

Postby millergrovesue » Sat May 02, 2015 2:48 pm

I have very mixed feelings about them. They are certainly an unwanted intrusion but part of the work Bob does is dealing with spammers for his clients. So, in a way they are a money maker for us. As I said - mixed feelings. :)

No mixed feelings here. Don't the rules say no spam allowed?

My little school's spam filter system is being overwhelmed by them because they have doubled their output in a little over a year. I dread approaching my superintendent for extra money for a better system, but it is going to happen. My school is not rich at all.

They have also found different ways to get the less savvy teachers to get their damn commie viruses, too. Our system was doing a good job of keeping that out, but they have figured out ways to get around the filter.

On the love side of spam, I love it at breakfast. It is a wonderful change of pace from bacon.

Yep, they are very creative and tenacious. Bob frequently has to write new software to deal with the new ways spammers are using to crack into servers. As I said - love/hate. 8-)

I am pretty savvy but almost got taken in by one just the other day. I read a news link from this site. Then, when I dismissed the link, a popup came up purportedly from Mozilla, telling me I needed to update my media player. AVG (my virus scanner) immediately popped up a message saying the link was suspect and that it had been blocked When I looked at the sender's address I noted that it looked fishy. Yep, another creative spammer that didn't get into my computer.

The last one that got me, about 2 years ago, was a trojan called CryptoLocker. We spent 2 days looking for a fix. No such thing. They locked up my computer and held if for ransom to the tune of $300. Yep, I paid it and they unlocked my computer.

Portuguese sausage Spam is now offered exclusively in Hawaii, and was released at the recent SPAM JAM.
