Mr. Zimmerman

Postby planosteve » Tue May 19, 2015 3:44 pm

I was at the library today. I stop by now and then to read the magazines. I always read Rolling Stone and Sound and Vision. That's the old Hi-Fi Stereo Review Mag that I subscribed to for decades. Then I look around at the others to see if there is anything else interesting. And I did. AARP Magazine! There on the cover was Bob Dylan!
And a whole article about him, his first interview in 3 years. I've always been amazed by the guy and have done lots of his songs over the years. We're almost the same age, I'm 8 months older.

The article is also in their online magazine. It is at: http://www.aarp.org/entertainment/style-trends/info-2015/bob-dylan-aarp-magazine.html He has a new studio album "Shadows in the Night" of old American classic songs.
There is a video of one of the songs on the new CD, "The Night We Called It A Day". I never heard the song before. Be sure and watch the video, it is a real hoot!

Anyway, it was good to see Bob is still out there doing his thing. Not many people can say that.

I dated one of his nieces up in NODAK a million years ago.

Bobby is one of kind, doesn't fit into any box.

I finally saw him live about 4 years ago at the Nokia. Strange but he didn't play guitar at all, just keyboard. One thing about Bob, he was always about the music. Everything else is secondary.

I've never heard that song either. Thought I knew most of the songs from that era. My Mom, who sang with a band when she was a youngster sang to my sister and me all the time so we learned a lot of 40s tunes. This one must not have been a hit. What a strange video he put with it.

Good for him that he wants to keep working, but I can't listen to what he's doing now. His Christmas album was perhaps the worst record ever made.

Like his "old" stuff. Have some of the albums. We saw him live in 73 or 74 in FW. Great show.

His time has passed and his voice is awful now.

The knock on Dylan has been his "singing" for a long time. Especially, the period when it sounded like he was mumbling the words. They said he couldn't sing. I thought his voice was perfect for the kind of music he was writing. But, your right, his voice was never right for a lot of music and is worse now.

Johnny Cash's voice was always awful but he made a great living anyway.

You don't have to have a great voice to be a successful singer. You need an expressive voice. Here's a good example.

Love me some Tom Waits. His version of Somewhere is just plain fabulous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO150w6iFwQ Others with bad voices who are/were great Leon Redbone and Joe Cocker.

I love to do Simple Twist of Fate. I play it in open D tuning with harmonica. Sounds really great.

Think my favorite is Lay Lady Lay. I like the instrumentation of that song so much.
