Has it gotten out of hand ?

The "Signers" seem to be putting on more of a show, than signing for deaf folks.

I caught part of Gov. Abbott's Press Conference about the Floods, and that women they had signing was very a little too boisterous, in my opinion and was just putting on a show.

Like that Fraud that was signing at Mandela's Funeral; which was fitting I suppose.

just a show , taxpayer funded and another gov employee !!

I wonder if deaf people would agree.

I had a student whose parents were both deaf, and they tried to use an interpreting service to communicate with me. They ultimately decided that it was more efficient and effective for an uncle to stay in contact with me about their child's needs. I took special care of the student.

In a cruel twist of fate, the child was an All-state vocalist, with a talent which the parents have never heard.

I don't know, but the exuberance gestures, body movements, and facial contortions look much different to me than sign language did a few years back, sort of a PC one women silent Greek Chorus.

What's wrong with closed captioning ?

seems to me that in personal interaction with a deaf person trying to communicate with me I'd just have them write notes , As far as mass communication , whats wrong with 'cc' which was already mentioned . To me the signing is just a show and is just catering to another Special group .

I'd rather see over active signers than those damned crawls across the bottom of the screen. Nothing makes me change the channel faster than a crawl.

I overactive signers detract from the message.
I can't absorb what the speaker is saying for noticing someone beside them dancing an animated jig.
Rolling captions are easy to ignore.

I use closed captioning all the time.

I often would rather just read what the people have to say on FBN than have it echo throughout my house.

And I rarely watch nighttime TV, but I did watch 24. The music and sound effects were so prominent, I used CC to help me figure out what Keifer Sutherland was saying..he seemed to whisper his way through the show.

If you have attended any event that uses a signer, you would see that it is "the way it is done" for the signer to have animated facial expressions. If you know sign language, the expressions are needed to convey the message. The hand gestures give part of the message and the face finishes getting the message to the person who is deaf. Hand gestures alone don't get it done.

For meany years we attended the storytelling festival in Denton. For us, part of the fun of the event was watching the sign language interpreters.

I think it is great that the people who are deaf are able to get news, find out what is happening in the world etc.
I think you would change your opinion if you ever lived with or knew a person who was deaf from birth. Their world is different from the person who has become deaf/hard of hearing after years of hearing.

For the Televised portion, couldn't the deaf folks just read the captions and watch the facial expressions of the speaker ?

I look as if that Lady at Abott's conference yesterday was going take off !

And that is not how it has always been done; the last few years the Singers have amped up their show.

Maybe the news signers watched the signers we saw at the storytelling festival. IDK

I generally ignore the signers at news events......I have seen some that put the signer in a little box as part of the news cast.
The signers at the storytelling festival stood on the stage with the performer and were hard to ignore.

Maybe easy for you to ignore but not for all of us. I cannot follow what is being said for the stupid crawls. And, as if 1 wasn't bad enough, they pile them 3 crawls high sometimes. I will not watch a show with crawls..............which is one of the many reasons I no longer watch t.v. news.

We use it all the time.
Sometimes it is a real challenge to know what the news story is about. If cc were used for serious situations someone would need to improve the comprehension of the story.
