Things you miss from the "good old days"?
Things you miss from the "good old days"?
Hearing bob white quail calling to each other?
Y'all?
Y'all?
Re: Things you miss from the "good old days"?
Not sure my "good ol days" would be "good ol days" to the rest of you, but I miss when I grew up in the late 60's and 70's when kids could ride their bikes and go all over the place without it being a big deal. I used to walk alone to the store and get things for my mother. I loved doing it and hate that it's no longer an option for my kids.

Horny Toads!!!! Yes quail too.
I remember when the fire ants moved in here. It was a couple of years after we moved here. The time before fire ants was wonderful. I can't believe I actually fought those big red harvester ants. These days I really like those ants and protect their trails as much as possible.
Being able to eat anything I wanted and not gaining an ounce.
A swimming pool within walking distance of the house as a child.
Working at the local riding stable.
The swimming pool, in the backyard of the house Bob owned when we married, in Austin.
And yes, Croc - the joy of being able to bike, walk, or take the city bus just about anywhere we wanted to go. And our parents not knowing where we were between meals and not having to care.
Working to love my fellow person regardless : >

I miss that, too.
I miss TALKING to people!! There are far too many people that just want to text these days.

I miss the neighborhood or downtown single-screen movie theater that showed the movie over and over. If you came in late or just wanted to watch it again, you waited 15 minutes and there it was. Plus a cartoon and maybe a two-reel short or a serial.
Current movie theater technology is great, but it's just not the same. And don't get me started on 20 minutes of movie trailers.

If you want to go down that road . . . freedom.

The monthly columns by Skeeter Skelton and Bill Jordan.

Also miss when the school cafeteria could service a decent lunch without having to worry about making kids fat and killing them with nuts. We sold candy at school and had coke machines at high school (gasp).

I buy those either in some annuals or going through old magazine stores , Have a few original old Skeeter articles , same with Jordan and some old Elmer Keith articles in those same old mags . Also have some old Keith books . Also have motorcycle mags starting from the late 40s up through the mid 1970s when there were still all kinds of motorcycles on the USA market .
Re: Things you miss from the "good old days"?
so , I miss the motorcycles of , especially the 60s , early 70s . They were modern enough to go cross country or ride all year round but were still classic motorcycles . New motorcycles are better in every way except that they are too modern , aren't very cool in my opinion . Many say that they have no character compared to older bikes .

In the education business, we have spent many a lunch reminiscing about the lunches of our childhood in the sixties, the things we used to have on the menu. My favorite was always the salmon croquets. As kids, we would try to see how much ketchup we could inject into one of those things without blowing it up. As a teacher, the only fish we have ever had were those damned fish sticks.
And there was the honey and the rolls. There were always kids who were looking around for others who wouldn't eat their rolls.
Sometimes, things like pimento cheese sandwiches would be the entree for the day. Or pinto beans. Or hot dogs. I loved them all. None of those things would ever make an appearance on today's lunch menu.
You know what? We were all thin as rails. So were our teachers.

Summers off.
Grandparents.
Feeling safe.
People who left their PJs at home instead of wearing them in public.
Tattoos being a rare sighting on unsavory people instead of the new norm.
Pancake suppers at church.
TV that went off the air by midnight.

Some coffee cups are just too small.

going to school from the mid 50s , and up to junior high the lunch ladies were the mothers of our friends . Seconds were always available for the asking and it was good . Course you could always get the girls at your table to shovel some of their plate unto your plate , same with milk . Same deal at home with my sisters if you didn't mind some partially gnawed pork chops , what the heck , they were my little sisters . Me , not overweight , described as big , at 17 I was 217 at 6 foot 3 and described as slim .

I fondly remember School Lunches actually prepared at the School, by members of the community that you knew.

It's ok if you disagree with me.
I can't force you to be right.

Playing sports in the streets.
Never locking your house.
People giving up their seats for older people.
Lower taxes that allowed one salary per household to suffice.
Kids were taught to respect their elders.
Mixed breed dogs were the exception..not the rule.
Schools were for learning..not for indoctrination.
Sports for girls?..not taken as seriously as sports for boys.

Cars with style & color. Cars with real names, not just random numbers & letters. You could telll the difference between a Buick & Olds & Mercury & Chrysler & Studebaker . . . I'd make a lousy crime witness. "Sir, can you identify the getaway car?". , "Uhhh, it was gray, no silver, no kinda grayish silver or silvery gray. Four doors." "Sir, what about the make & model?". "Uhhhhh (eyes glazing over)".

Sitting around the glowing embers of a campfire with my granddad. Just the two of us.
