Going down there Tuesday night or Wednesday morning with my husband and our two girls. It's been about 5 years. it's not my favorite beach but we have a free place to stay and it's a shorter drive the Padre Island. With kids, that is a big factor.

Anyone else been down there lately? What did you do? Where did you eat?

We went about 3 weeks ago. No seaweed & probably the best time we have ever had on the beach. ( because of conditions )

In laws live in Pearland so we drove down both days

Eat fresh seafood. Lots of good restaurants on the bay.

Shrimp n Stuff and Stingaree (Crystal Beach) have both been recommended to me.

It's been a loooooooooong time since I went to Galveston just for fun. Is the Boliver ferry still running? I used to love to ride it and watch the dolphins. And it was free.

It was a family tradition back in the late 40's and 50's for my folks to take us to Galveston for a week. Always had a great time as a child. Lots of shops on piers to get all the sea shells, T shirts, sun glasses, etc a tourist could ever want.

Spent a week of my Honeymoon in Galveston at the Flagship Inn in the early 60's. It was the one on a pier over the water and at the time was brand new. Great place to stay then. Time and a Hurricane took it away years later.

Went down once more in 1980, not so impressed
by the beach, the shops, the cheap motels or the food, back then. I understand the food is pretty good nowdays.

Glenn, I would prefer to go to Port Aransas, but we were offered a place to stay in Galveston. The drive is much shorter too which is good with kids. The kids will have fun no matter what beach we are on....

Can't go wrong with Shrimp n Stuff; although parking and tables are at a premium during peak eating times.

My dad was telling stories about Galveston in the 50's; he and my mom went on a date at a casino on the Strand. He and my mom were at school (med tech for him; RN for her) through 57. We moved back as a family in 62 so he could go to medical school. I went to Catholic school through 3rd grade there.

Galveston has really changed. Lots of rules on the beach; lots of the good family owned restaurants have been replaced by chains.

We have done lots of family vacations; stuff our kids liked was Sea Wolf park out on Pelican Island (WWII sub to go through); the RR museum (ok, that's me); the ferry (park, then walk on); mini-golf (several options). My kids hated the gulf water; seems like we were always there when the water was nasty. But they did like to build sand castles...

Moody Gardens is kind of nice, but it is kind of expensive. My son likes the aviation museum at the airport, near Moody Gardens.

May have mentioned before when I was young, single, and lived in Austin I used to drive down to Galveston just to watch the waves for a few hours. Then I'd turn around and drive back home. Didn't hurt that I had a Triumph Spitfire convertible and loved any excuse to drive it. I love Galveston because it was my first view of the ocean. I was last down there for a conference about 10 years ago and was thrilled to be there while being disappointed at how much it had changed...............but that's the way I feel about my hometown. Sadly, ya can't stop progress.

I am right there with you.As is my son, a school Principal, takes his family to Port A. every summer with their 30 ft trailer for the summer. They get around on their golf cart while there and being from the Austin area they are able to go home a few times, w/o the trailer, in the summer for whatever needs arise.

I also like Mustang Island, a lot.

I'm hoping to take them on one more short overnight trip before the summer is over. Not sure where that will be quite yet.

Sue, you can't see both my girls in that picture? I thought you could see the backs of both of their heads. We were riding the ferry to Port Bolivar.

Finally got the thing to scan back and forth.

Yes we did see some. It was neat.
