Subdued Independance Day ?

Postby Red Oak » Mon Jul 06, 2015 10:47 am

On our trip out to the Owl Hoot this past week end, I noticed a lack of Independence Day Decorations and celebrations; even the few Fire Works Stands didn't seem to have much business. The notable exception was Munday, Texas which had a very nice display of Flags.

Did anyone else notice this ?

No fireworks around us. I consider that a very good thing. :D

I saw a nice town celebration and personal flags on display . Lots of talk on my local radio station that 'Independence Day' was subdued as it has been replaced by 'happy 4th of july' day . Nice big fireworks here though . Hear in nationwide news that fireworks are being reduced due to air pollution , fire and safety concerns . One big concern is over a guy that put a Cherry Bomb on his head and so he got kilt . Course after that , there was more beer for everybody else at that particular 'happy 4th of july' deal !!

Yeah, I believe that was a "mortar" and yes, alcohol seems to have been involved. Stupid and sad.

Munday, TX...

We lived in Munday for two years. My dad got paid in watermelons one time, we had watermelons coming out of our ears that summer...

Munday used to have a TAMU research station; one of the crops developed there (at least how it was spun locally) was seedless watermelons...

San Angelo and most anywhere close seemed to go all out. Pops in town Friday, lake side fireworks Saturday, lake had water, and every boat from west of here came by on the way to water, mertzon had a big deal, so did big lake, and eldorado, fire works stands did a big business, city fathers whining about all the trash that was left behind.
Last week we lost a San Angelo policeman in an on duty traffic accident, services filled the coliseum, he was escorting drag boats to twin peaks for a promotion, twin peaks made a sizable donation along with the racers, and about everyone else in town. Ain't a blue ribbon in town that isn't tied around something.

All the places in Ellis, Johnson and Hi counties celebrated as usual. Mood seems just like always.
