How are the Blue Knights doing this summer?

They busted 80 for the first time last night and are holding onto sixth place. The west coast leg of their season is over and now they are moving through Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. They will have a competition in Belton (Belton ?) on Thursday and then the southwestern championship in the Alamadome on Saturday. We are driving to San Antonio for that. Then they will be in Dallas next Monday for a competition at Lake Highlands stadium. After that they move east and then north and eventually finish the season at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. We are driving to Indianapolis for the finals.

Thanks for asking. I don't talk about it much because it's hard to explain exactly what they do.

Please let us know how these competitions go. Bragging on your kids is a good thing.

In the meantime here is an interesting story.

First you have to appreciate what it takes to move one of these these corps from city to city. At least 3 buses, one 18 wheeler with all the instruments, uniforms and props, and one 18 wheeler that is the traveling kitchen. The corps staff probably travels in a separate vehicle as well.

Anyway, this morning I was driving to work down Central Expressway and I saw an 18 wheeler pulled over to the right shoulder with hazard lights blinking. As I passed the truck I could read the name "Blue Devils" on the side. Blue Devils won the championship last year and are currently ranked #1 in the standings. I started to double back and see what the problem was but it would have made me late for work and I knew the driver would be in contact with the rest of the convoy. So screw you, Blue Devils!

I checked the Blue Devils schedule and they had a competition last night in Bentonville, Ark and were on their way to a rehearsal and housing site in Katy. They will compete in a show in Cypress Friday night and then will move on to San Antonio for the big show in the Alamodome on Saturday. We will be there in support of our corps - the Blue Knights.

Good video clips are hard to come by because they prohibit recording the performances. Copyright issues. But of course some stuff gets out.

Their show is titled "Because" and is based on the Beatles song. You can hear a little of it in this section. My son is a flag spinner but there are no flags in this section.

Is it something like a marching band or drum and bugle corps ?

They call it a drum and bugle corps but it's evolved into something like a marching Las Vegas review. Lots of props - lots of movement.

And their competitions put thousands of people in stadiums.

I immediately knew that was your son. He looks so much like you! But I did count off and yes, of course it's your son. I'll cheer for the rest of the season if you'll just let us know when and where they'll be.
