There are some people that live a couple of miles west of us. They have a couple of dogs that refuse to stay home. Several of us around here have spoken to them about problems with them running our cattle. Problem has continued.

I was sitting out early this morning and heard them raising hell in my pasture on the other side of the creek. I got in my truck and drove back there. They won't be running any more cattle.

+1 Sounds like you did what you could... and had to.

Very sad but you had done all you could. People with the attitude of "We live in the country so our dogs should run free." disgust me. Not when they bother your neighbors or livestock they shouldn't.

A number of years ago my next door neighbor's dogs killed most all of my chickens. I loaded the dogs up, took them back, and told the people if it happened again the dogs would disappear. The dogs never came over here again and they gave me all of their chickens.

We have a current neighbor whose 5 large dogs come over here almost every day. Drives Alex crazy. They have been known to swim in my fish pond which seriously pisses me off. They had 6 dogs but some other neighbor shot one. If you love your dogs keep them at home!

They were pretty upset. He finally said something along the line of, "you have all told me there was a problem". I helped him bury them.

Years ago Bob hit and killed a dog about 4 miles north of us. The owners were really upset. Told him how much they loved that dog. Bob told them "We love our dogs too. That's why we keep them in a fenced yard." I can't count the # of dogs those idiots have lost since then because they never bothered to fence them in. I imagine they "loved" all of them.

I realize there are people who let their dogs run loose especially in the country. But we adopted one last year that was quite the escape artist. I chased her down many times and neighbors would call me to come get her. I really cared about her and she was the perfect sized dog. But she finally ran out in the street one time too many and got ran over. I was always afraid that day would come and it did. The hardest thing was finding her like that back last December which kept me messed up for quite a while. We have another dog now who is quite a handful. Occasionally he runs out the garage on us, but never goes far. He wants to be in the house with us more than outside roaming around. I just worry about his chasing a car. So we do our best to keep him in the yard and house....

I have a neighbors cattle all over the Owl Hoot right now; the river washed out his water gap.

At some point I am going to have to ask him firmly, to fix his damn fence and get his cattle off my place.

Not wanting to beat you up..I'm sure you're a responsible person.

But it does seem people in Texas do not take the time to train their dogs. That's just something that is understood here..people do not have dogs that would run out in the street.

Perhaps it's because houses and things are so close together.

There's just no choice..you train your dog to stay with you. But if a dog DOES get out and runs around, it's also understood that everyone is responsible to return that dog to it's home. And obviously all dogs need to be carrying their name and address on their collar.

We adopted her from the shelter....as I found out very soon, she was there for a reason. Maybe with 2 kids and a disabled husband, she was not the right fit...we are really more suited for cats...but one of them wants a dog. She was little, fast and hard to catch. We would do our darndest to chase her down every single time, so it's not like I just left her out there to roam. And I tried to work with and train her too irregardless of what you think. Guess I made a mistake by posting this. But wanted to say that not EVERY dog that is loose on the streets has an owner that doesn't care.

And there is no way dogs don't ever get loose where you live. Please...

If I were you, I'd put the one that really wants a dog in charge of training it.

She can read about it online..how to first train the dog to heel..then sit..then stay and lie down.

But first you must get the dog to walk with you civilized.."heeling"..daily training will take a week or two for that..and she must use a training collar, also known as a choke chain.

For an 8 year old child, she is pretty good with the dog.

Good..I bet your 8 year old can do this.

Shih Tzus don't do that. They are useless for hunting.

..besides, they might mess up their hair.

But all dogs can be trained to walk civilized..not run away..and obey basic commands.

And I have owned English and Irish Setters..they used to point at anything ad everything in the yard..it was fun to watch..never used them for hunting though..they were just pets.

You missed out on not hunting over the Setters.... and they did also.
