The guy wasn't that crazy.
Being branded as a sexual deviant and porn addict makes him part of the modern day elite.

He should have also converted to Islam and bought a wheelchair. He could rule the world.

Of course if it had worked, he'd have been the toast of the town. Now he's labeled as "teaparty" That's much worse in this upside down country than being gay. Because being gay is cool. Being teaparty means your a crazy person that pays their taxes, holds a job, believes in God, believes in the constitution and tries to restore the country to constitutional law. The reporter just had to get that tea party connection in there because that's the worst of the scandal, right?

This was actually more mundane and traditional than that. He wanted to get the outrageous, false accusation put out there in order to make himself a victim of a media conspiracy (or something like that). Then when the real story came out, people would already be in a more wait-and-see frame of mind.

This highlights the difficulty for conservative candidates. When human frailty creeps in, they have to either admit it and be drummed out, or go to some lengths to lie/cover it up. Liberals can say, "So what? I'm a victim. This is the new normal. Vote for me and I'll give you stuff." The media will excoriate the conservative, either way, and paint the liberal as a sympathetic figure, unless he has inexplicably failed to unconditionally support abortion.
