On August 8, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign from office.

I think it was a media assassination.
Liberals had despised Nixon since his role in exposing Communist spy, Alger Hiss in the late 1940s. They had never forgiven him for it.
Nixon definitely mishandled the Watergate scandal. But I still say he didn't do anything any worse than previous presidents had done- particularly LBJ.

Anyway, today marks 41 years.

"You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference."

And sure enough we don't.

He said that in 1962 after he lost the California governor's race.
We had him to kick around for another 12 years after that.

By today's standards Nixon was a paragon of virtue, and in comparison to LBJ, JFK, and FDR a Saint !

Classmate from elementary school had in his hand an officers revolver when President Nixon went past us in a car.

I've always said (years ago) that if he ran again, I'd vote for him.
