It is said we all remember where we were on certain dates in our past which are important for one reason or another.

Today. November 22, 1963 is one of those dates for me.

I was aboard the USS Waccamaw, a Navy Fleet Oiler anchored off the coast of Izmir, Turkey, Four months into a six month deployment to the Med.

RIP: John F. Kennedy 5/29/17--11/22/63.

Where were you on this date and what other event will you always remember ?

I was in a high school history class. About half of the class did cheer. I wonder how they feel now?

AT USF in Tampa, Fl.

Standing in front of my freshman dormitory in TN.

A near by neighbor had turned his ration up full blast so most of the
residents on campus could hear the coverage ... went to a movie the
next day and the newsreel (some of you don[t know what that
means) was about JFK visit to FW and latter to Dallas.

All the showed was a great parade... NOTHING about the assisnation.

3rd grade.

A public school in which the whole class had to fold their hands like Catholics saying prayers.. and walk to the school auditorium like that..also our heads down.

Then I remember days and days of the most boring, morbid TV..man I hated that.

6th grade class, Lakeview Elementary School north of Waco.

At the 727th Tactical Control Squadron radar site at Myrtle Beach S. Carolina.

Got the announcement while I was taking a spelling test in my eighth grade English class. We had a substitute teacher that day. She made the last word on the spelling test "Kennedy." Shortly after they cancelled classes for the rest of the day.

There is a lot of the original news coverage available on YouTube. The WFAA coverage is really interesting to watch and ponder how live news coverage has evolved. Smoking at the news desk, making diagrams on a chalkboard, trying to get telephone calls on the air. Also noteworthy are appearances by Abraham Zapruder and Mr. Peppermint's alter ego Jerry Haynes.

3rd Grade. CB Berry Elementary School, Arlington Tx. We were dismissed and told to show respect and be quiet on leaving. Living across the street from School, I guess I found out sooner than some what had happened. My Mom was in tears when I got home.

It was my custom to listen to the KRLD news during my after lunch time in my room. I was in the midst of writing a letter home to my parents when I heard the news.

No talking..no music..just some kind of slow, silent, weird parade that went on for hours and hours.

That's what I remember.

I was 5

I was a patient at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda Maryland. It was horrible.

A classmate named Stan was holding a little transistor radio up to his ear & several classmates around him. I didn't know anything about it until the Principal came in & told us right after 1pm. She also told us to pray for the Kennedy family, the country & LBJ. Our teacher, Mrs Olson was a little upset & she led us in prayers. I was afraid we would get arrested for praying in school. It got more emotional when we watched the custodian lower the flag to half-staff. Then we went back to our lessons for the rest of the day. No early dismissal for us.

1st grade, school was let out early. I also remember the seemingly continuous tv news coverage for 2 or 3 days.

4 months old in my crib I would assume....
