Speaking of transexual persons

Do you or have you ever known a person who did have surgery to change that person's sexual identity? Someone you really knew, not a story from the media...
I would not say that I knew her, but there was a sales rep in the library world that dressed as a female. However, her size and adam's apple led me to believe that she had had the sex change surgery. Of course, one does not ask.
When I was in the grocery world, there was an employee in a Tom Thumb store that was in the process, I believe. He/she was very androgenic (androgenis?) in appearance.
I could not decided if it were a male going female or female changing to male. After a few months either the change was complete or he/she left the employment of TT. I was afraid to ask anyone for fear of being told, "That is my ___ (relative)."
That has been my only real life experience in that world.
I'd guess most of us either never have known someone who is trans, or the person was so true to the new sex that we could not tell.
