For those with kids or grandkids still in school.

You might suggest that they take a look at the Bluebonnet series of books. The kids down here in Maypearl are crazy about them.

The Bluebonnet list changes every year. Bluebonnet list is for the kids grades 3-6.
Texas Librarians suggest 20 books that they believe the kids will like.....(other states make their lists)
All of the lists make a good place to start if you are seeking a book for your child.

Sometimes there are some duds, but usually a list of good titles.

There is a similar list for Middle schoolers named the Lone Star List.

And, for the age 2 to 2nd grade, there is the 2x2 list.

Husband and I are reading 2 books that are aimed at the middle schooler.
Both of us have really liked the books.

First book is Wednesday Wars
(about a 7th grader who has a one-on-one lesson with his teacher each Wed. She makes him read Shakespeare.)
Second is OK for Now
(features a boy who is drawn to Audubon's bird art work)

Grouchy, perhaps you and your grandson will like these two. He is a MS student now, right?

Trey is 6th grade and Tanner is 8th. I will ask him to check out OK for Now.
He wanted to get a jump on his AR points so he read a 186 page book over the weekend.

My niece and her family (16 year old and 10 year old) plus husband listened to OK for Now on their drive to Texas last week. All liked it.

He is now reading "Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer". He loves it.

Be aware that the books I mentioned have fathers in the 2 books who are cruel to their children.

In the book OK for Now--the father qualifies for a child abuser, IMO.

Another fun book to read: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Gantos.
If you have any connection to a child with ADHD, it is a must read. The main character has ADD and the book lets us know what he is thinking and why he keeps getting in trouble. It was written for children, but I think adults should read it--especially teachers.
