Rangers dip into high school ranks for Ortiz

By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have taken right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz from Sanger (Calif.) High School with the 30th pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

Ortiz is considered one of harder throwers among the available high school pitchers, with a fastball that is 91-94 mph. He also has a slider and a changeup and has shown a good ability to throw strikes.

When drafted by the Rangers, Ortiz immediately felt a twinge in his elbow.

Texas Rangers select
Mississippi HS SS Ti'Quan Forbes
with No. 59 overall pick

Ti'Quan Forbes has the potential to be a star with average or better raw tools across the board. He's a tall, lanky kid at 6'4" and 170 pounds who might not stick at shortstop, but the speed and range helo his glove play up. There's a lot of upside for Texas to work with in the future.
