The current royal family is not related to the former royal family and took over in 1901. That's 121 years. Queen Victoria was the first queen and her husband, Albert was a German!

Then all historians are mistaken in their belief that Edward VII was the son of Victoria, whom he succeeded? Or, for that matter, that there were a number of queens who ruled in their own right before Victoria?

Sorry, but you are eat up with the ignorant on this. The House of Hanover ended, and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (changed to Windsor) began in 1901 because of patrilineal succession. Queen Victoria's son (Edward VII) belonged to his father's royal house, and that's why it changed in 1901. The current house is not only related, it is of direct and immediate dissent.

Including Queen Elizabeth, there have been 6 female sovereigns of England / UK.
Queen Victoria was the granddaughter of George III, her father was Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the 4th son of George, his older brothers having no legitimate heirs. Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, because he was pretty much the only Protestant royal available anywhere. They changed their name to Windsor in 1917, during WW1 due to anti-German feelings. Battenbergs became the Mountbattens at the same time. Where did 1901 come from? George I begat George II, who begat George III, who begat Edward, Duke of Kent, who begat Victoria, who begat Edward VII, who begat George V, who begat Edward VIII & George VI, who begat Elizabeth II, who begat Charles III. With all that begatting, both legitimate & illegitimate, it's a wonder they had any time to do anything else. If Edward VIII had not abdicated, Elizabeth would still have been queen, when he died in 1972. Edward had a late case of the mumps. History lesson is over. This will be on the test.

I feel like I'm parked diagonally in a parallel universe.

All of England's and the UK's kings and queens regnant (not consorts) have been related to one another and are descendants of William the Conqueror (theoretically, at least, who knows what DNA would reveal).
