Still not an excuse. By any chance, are you related to Darrell Brooks from Waukesha, WI?
I knew it! :D

No, I'm not from eastern Kansas. Again, not an excuse. Again, Darrell Brooks?

You do know that a huge area of Florida was damaged by Ian, right? Right? Are you so dense that you think the entire $33 billion is going to only Sanibel Island? Jeez.

I know that it's just a ball park guess and they won't know what the final cost will be for a very long time. It will probably be a whole lot more than just 33 billion so they will be back for more.

Less than a month after Hurricane Ian caused widespread devastation to southwestern Florida, investors and other buyers are scouring for housing deals in a region where home prices have soared in recent years.

Demand remains strong from both locals and out-of-staters, according to residential real-estate agents in Naples, Fla., and other areas near the path of the Category 4 storm. They say they have received numerous inquiries from people still interested in relocating to the Sunshine State, or hoping to pick up distressed properties.

“It’s pretty much business as usual,” said Kelly Baldwin, an agent for Coldwell Banker in Longboat Key, Fla. “I haven’t had anyone reach out who wants to stop their home search.”

Much sooner than I expected, but not surprised.

Here's a good article that points out what happened to another community, Mexico Beach, after a hurricane destroy much of it 4 years ago. I expect much the same will be true this time. Most people will be priced out and not able the afford to return. Home prices will be far higher as building specifications will be much different and expensive and so will insurance.

People will still want to go to the beach to swim, get some sun, build sand castles, go fishing, etc even if they don't rebuild a single house. Nothing wrong with that. But knowing people, in a few years, without a storm, memories of Ian will fade. Homes will be built & it all happens again.

That's possible if it remains private property. I don't think that it should be because of this disaster. I don't think most of Padre Island which is a barrier island is private. You don't have to build a house on a beach to enjoy it.
