A visitor to Dacheau in 1996, Joe Cortina reported the following:

Outside of the crematory I was startled to see a large information billboard that stated that ‘no inmate’ had ever been ‘gassed’ there.

The billboard also stated that the delousing rooms were to treat inmates for lice and that the two oven crematories - (as ALL of those in ALL other camps) - were used to burn dead bodies contaminated with highly communicable diseases, such as cholera and typhus, so as to prevent an epidemic. My Jewish camp guide affirmed the statements on the billboard.

The "gas chamber" at Auschwitz is a fake. It was built after the war.

That's according to Dr. Franciszek Piper, senior curator and director of archives of the Auschwitz State Museum. Of course I suppose he could be lying.

At this time, additional walls were built inside the former gas chamber. An additional entrance was made from the east side of the gas chamber and openings in the ceiling, [through which] the gas Zyklon B was discharged [to the] inside, were at the time liquidated.

A fact that I've always found interesting: Some of the camps closed when Allied forces neared them but others, such as Auschwitz, actually closed because there were no longer sufficient potential victims to justify their survival. IOW, they had killed so many that not enough were left to justify their existence.

The prisoners that still remained to be exterminated were moved closer and closer to Germany as the war came to its conclusion; where possible the camps outside of Germany were dismantled, destroyed or buried (Complete with crops planted over them) to hide the German atrocities.

Actually, Auschwitz was evacuated. The prisoners were sent to other camps. 58,000 to another camp in Poland and 20,000 survived being marched to Bergan-Belsen in Germany. There were 7,500 prisoners still alive in Aushwitz when the Russians arrived.

Good questions. Jews could probably answer these. This little Baptist girl (NOT Southern!) figures it probably has a lot to do with how the individual identifies themselves.

I've always found it interesting that, as much as Judism seems like a race or ethnicity (at least to me......and for lack of a better term), a convert is considered on the same "level" (again for lack of a better term) as one with Jewish ancestry.
